The May 4th Memorial speaks on more than just the events that occurred, on that day in 1970. This memorial calls out towards the current social climate as well, speaking against racism and prejudice. This a place where all can not only reflect on past events, but come together to celebrate one another. The space can be utilized for gatherings and events for multiple occasions, with areas to relax with friends and family.
The memorial itself represents a dark cloak being pulled over our eyes, creating division, just like that in 1970. The events leading up to May 4th, 1970, as well as the names of the students fatally shot and injured are inscribed into this dark granite. The light stone, that is occupiable space for seating, represents the light that can overcome the cloak over our eyes, if we all come together. The space overall is more than just a memorial, but a space for all to come together to inquire, learn, and reflect.
